Wrinkles
Wrinkles and facial lines are very common cosmetic concerns of the skin ageing process. The severity of these changes depends on genetic tendency, skin types, and exposure to sun and environmental factors such as smoking.
Common cosmetically bothersome wrinkles and lines which people seek treatment for include-
  • Crow’s feet wrinkles around the eyes are due to smiling and contraction of the eyelid muscles.
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows are due to contraction of a few facial muscles in that area when one is angry, frowning or concentrating.
  • Forehead wrinkles are due to contraction of the forehead muscle when raising the eyebrows.

Treatment for Wrinkles

Treatment will need to be discussed and individualised based on cosmetic concerns and needs.
Botulinum toxin (Botox) injection is a very popular treatment for facial wrinkles and lines reduction. It is generally an effective, safe and well tolerated procedure which can achieve quick effective results by softening the movement-associated facial wrinkles and lines.
It is important not to overtreat these facial lines which are necessary for facial expressions, to avoid a “frozen look”. The aim of treatment is to restore youthful appearance in a more natural way, by softening the effects of facial muscles of expression and not to paralyse all movement.
The effects of Botox gradually fades usually after 4-6 months, and repeated injections may be necessary.
Dermal fillers may be added to complement the Botox treatment, by adding volume and gently smoothening out the wrinkles and lines.
