Excision surgery for benign skin tumours
There are many benign “lumps and bumps” on or under the skin which can be treated and removed completely by skin excision surgery. Once these skin tumours are excised, they will be sent for histology analysis to confirm the diagnosis.
Common benign skin tumours which can be removed by excision surgery include sebaceous (or epidermal) cysts, lipomas, benign moles, and certain birthmarks (such as nevus sebaceous, epidermal nevus).
What do I expect from Excision Surgery?
The procedure is generally well tolerated and performed under local anesthesia.
The skin tumour is removed entirely using a sharp knife (scalpel) once the skin is adequately numbed by anesthesia, and the resulting wound repaired and closed up using fine stitches. Once the wound heals, there will be a scar which generally will improve with time.
